I taken many short trips last year and 1 long trip on the Potomac with my daughter with full gear in the middle. This is the first canoe I have owned and my 10 yr old son and I use it to fish and paddle lakes and rivers (class 2 rapids max.) I like it pretty well, and especially for the price. You might wonder why I rated this canoe an 8 after what I say about it but there is something I like about it. Also have a 30 Lb electric and that works very well too. Seats suck and inhibit how / where you load stuff. The Mad River is an excellent river for you to discover the great outdoors by canoe. Seatbacks are comfortable, with good leg room from both seats, but I wouldn't use the middle seat for a 3rd passenger. I have seen this on two occasions. Appears to be very stable with the wife up front and myself in the rear seat. It didn't grow on me, it surprises me that people actually like this death trap. And the boat is comfortable, the seats are the reason my wife let me get this boat, and they delivered as promised. The only real thing I would think about to tell Mad River about would be to put some form of a grab handle at the center of gravity for those who paddle by themselves to lift and carry easier. Also went out in a calm lake with 200 Lb man in the front, 200 Lbs man in the middle + deep cycle battery, and 190 Lb man in the back with one of those red Colman that hold 54 beers full of ice and beer. I have really loaded this boat up!! have brought friends out in they love it too. A little heavy, but my son and I can put it in the bed of my truck easily. Some people say it's "tippy" but I don't agree. The weight issue of lifting it on and off my mini-van was solved when a friend of mine welded a few bit's on to my trailer and now I can load up the trailer paddles gear cooler etc and go any where to paddle easy load and unload. All rights reserved. If I damaged this canoe, you can repair them easy, too bad to be fixed then I would buy another one. I believe with a sand bag or a person would reduce this problem a lot. It’s for those of us who need to rely on our own two hands, and because of this, it privileges stability and maneuverability; you won’t miss the second paddler as you go down the river. This thing is a joy to use. Check out all the cup holders! Go Back. A petty gripe that the seat backs, handles, pouches and good construction more than make up for. We absolutely love the little Adventure 14! I'd look for another if something were to happen to this one. I had no idea that there were others that had problems with the canoe bending upward in the center. LOVE IT! It is light enough for me, 34 yo, to portage solo if need be, and is plenty spacious for all that I could want in canoe. Got the Mad River Adventurer 14 for lakes in Colorado that don't allow motors. Overall I would buy again but now I'm looking for a one person kayak. I highly recommend a Mad River canoe! It is a great canoe for the price. Tracks great both up and down the Wisconsin River. I have gone by myself and with some weight in the front end is great for getting around. This rugged & versatile canoe is great for getting away from it all on lakes, ponds, and slow rivers. As for the guy who says his is "bowing" in the middle, how is it being stored? (Can use two gallon jugs filled with water which is fifteen pounds ). My only complaint about this canoe is the formed floor and middle seat make it difficult to float with a large sized cooler for overnight trips, but I've learned how to make due. In the first instance I sat in the back at 235 lb with my niece in the front at about a hundred 190 lb this was very stable. I love the seats and back rests. Wilderness systems is the leader in kayaks and they really did a great job building these canoes. Then go ahead and strap on the adventure 14 with whatever method works best for your vehicle. Would recommend to a friend looking to buy one. It tracks very nicely, and is stable in even the roughest of wakes with 2 adults, a ten year old, and 2 chihuahuas! Mad River Passage 14 A favorite for those who are used to sailing solo, the Mad River Passage is small, but it caters specifically to the needs of fishing fans. This was a short ride (45 minutes) but we all had a blast and really had no issues with stability. The canoe sat almost flat and felt very stable. And it's a great rig! Finally this canoe is easy to paddle backwards in rivers when un-snagging fishing lines. It is actually built by Wilderness Systems for Mad River. I needed a 3-seater, short, & fairly light. Very maneuverable. I bought a Passage 14 about a week ago, I had read all the reviews and I noticed some people think it is tippy. I've taken it on a few trips but unless it's just you and one other person going on a one day trip you will need to to bring at least one more canoe to hold much of the gear. I can't explain their experience. Have had this canoe out twice now - once on a small lake and once on a quiet river. Or even Adirondack guide boats that you could carry around with a yoke, but this Adventure 14 is much too cumbersome to carry around with other than being towed on wheels. Comes with 3 paddles and 1 pfd. Adventure for a year and the center of the canoe started to collapse inward/upward on me. The multi-chine shallow arch hull design provides smooth tracking and comforting stability and is constructed with polyethylene for superior durability. I would definitely recommend this canoe to a family that is on a budget, but loves family outings. The first and only time I took it out was by myself which I wouldn't have done except for the fact that my family won't ride in it yet although I think I'll bring them around before long. This is a great canoe! Not only did they send me a new one in about 5 days, but the sent me a pair of handles!!! If you hit a rock on grade 3 the boat splits or holes far to easily. A great canoe for getting active; for sportsmen, families or as a second canoe, the Adventure 14 is an amazing value. Forget an overnight campout with a lot of gear. I got rid of it before it bent so bad that I could not sell it. Part of reason boat is stable is that you sit in center of molded seats so two paddlers can’t shift weight suddenly side to side and rock boat. It has a wine-stem stern that aids in tracking, and molded-in seats for comfort and added rigidity; it is constructed from polyethylene so it's durable and virtually maintenance free. The rugged and versatile Adventure 14 is great for getting away from it all on lakes, ponds, and slow rivers. I used this 4x in 2018 when i bought it as the second owner. I really have no idea what people are talking about. The first day out it took some getting used to(not hard to learn, just finding the limits) The second day out my buddy and I floated the Missouri river from Kansas City to St. Louis in the worlds longest canoe race. AHHHHH! Hinged Motor Mount (Flipper) Hinged for trolling motors where you are worried about hitting something underwater. We picked the 14 footer over the 16 footer Dicks offers because unlike the Passage 16; the Passage 14 is the identical shape/design of the Adventure 14. The Adventurer had a good scrape on the rudder but no splits or serious damage. The version I have paddled is from a few years back, and it appears that newer versions may have improved the hull shape some for stability. Length: 14' Material: Polyethylene Great for exploring lakes and slow-moving streams, this sturdy recreational canoe provides stable paddling performance for both the entry-level paddler and those looking for a reliable family canoe. On the whole I'm quite pleased, especially as I bought it used for 200 with paddles and square seat floats. Toughness - this roto molded poly has been beat and banged and slid across concrete a bunch. #14 Or take the the death ride up from deer camp. I wonder, but I will sure let you know if mine does that. Today was the first day I put it on the water. Later on, the wind calmed down and the canoe handled just as well in the conditions. Once the end is secure to the t bar, walk to the other end of the canoe, lift up and walk/swing the canoe around and place on the top of your vehicle. Description. I stood up in it in the center on still water and paddled it, still stable. Wohoo! I am 6’ 275 and it does ok with just me in it. I'm 6'3" so it's a little tight but we love it and the price is good, weight don't bother us as we both carry it to the water! So I settled for the 14 foot. With two people is cruises right along. Only the Adventure. The multi-chine shallow arch hull design provides smooth tracking and comforting stability and is constructed with polyethylene for superior durability. But, I really like the length of the canoe - it's easy to put in the back of my pickup with the tailgate down. The "responsiveness" of the canoe is amazing. Mad River Canoe Journey 156. ... 300 lbs). Just stuff them in the seat back and you'll be all set. Light, good price, comfortable, good for fishing. I believe with either the front occupied by weight or a person (or if I have side stabilizers) that I will like this canoe more. Bought the Adventure 14 - used with a engine bracket. Was easy to turn as well. We bought it because it looked like a fun, sporty boat, which it is. I love this boat. Read and submit reviews for the Adventure 14. I am rating this as a recreational canoe not as a white water canoe or high performance canoe. It may not be the quickest through the water, or designed for anything above moderate white water, but what you get is a stable, comfortable, well made canoe for not a lot of money. Tumblehome - I like that it has some to make paddling a little easier. I was surprised, it was actually more stable than I had originally thought. The initial stability was quite bad - my son turning only his torso to look at something was enough to rock the boat. The seats are awesome I can fish for hours in comfort. I bought the Adventure 14 this summer from Dicks Sporting Goods at a discount because one one of the handles was broken. We had a kid one time that was jumping around like a freak. This boat is beautiful. The seat and seat back are simply awesome. This way you can lower your center of gravity if needed, you can oar with more power and you can even maneuver the boat slightly with your legs. I would rate the plastic as 0 if the web page would allow this. Space is at a premium in this canoe, so you have to examine every nook and cranny for gear to fit. I brought my dad, my younger brother and my dog. Made of a durable, worry-free polyethylene, this tough canoe stands up to the occasional scrape on a riverbed. I bought a boat and i wish i used it more. I always float solo in mine and it works great. This thing is a little heavy and not easy for two of us to load. I owned a 14 ft. I have had this canoe for a little over a year now. You can do everything from chillin out Floating, Fishing, to Paddling hard and hitting some smaller rapids. At first glance storage looks limited, but there's actually quite a bit of room under the seats. I didn't really feel like paying an extra $200 for only two extra feet anyway. Would recommend this canoe to anyone. And having a middle seat makes it valuable for families. Just recently we went to Paddle at the point in Downtown Pittsburgh (Breaking a World Record) and saw a Mad River 14ft Adventure. So I think it is very stable. Next I plan to take it fishing. Bought this canoe for family use and has done a great job. It can be tippy with a lot of weight but it’s a canoe. We were looking for an all around recreational family canoe that was affordable and durable and tracked reasonably well. All the performance of the Adventure 16, with added stability and ease of handling on and off the water. it has handled fine everywhere i went with it and i must say to a comment i read earlier if your stupid enough to be riding it near hard rocks then duh its gonna get holes and cracks in it but 1st of all its not a piece of crap that just rips apart for just bumping into something (unless your on a swift current witch i have not REALLY been on yet.) I then did find a excellent kit at sailboatstogo.com for 749.00. Packed with features like comfortable, padded mol I solo'd it sitting in the middle bench seat. I like it!!!! The Adventurer 14 makes a stable and fairly fast sailboat. If your on the heavier side you will want a weight in the front if you plan on sitting in the back, which I've found works fine for me solo. I read many reviews of this canoe like 5+ years old. The room is limited, but what it lacks in storage it makes up in comfort. Mad River Adventure 14 Canoe. Nope, no tipping. Major pluses – Comfortable molded Seats, adjustable well positioned seat backs, middle seat for tackle box, soft carrying handles, canoe tracking (thanks to two longitudinal grooves on floor of boat), tying off an anchor from soft handle (center line of boat so no rocking), elliptical canoe cross section so hands don’t scrape on side while paddling, Stability (drove right through white caps, motorized boat wakes didn’t phase us). I rocked it to the point of almost allowing water over the gunnels, but it resisted tipping. Cons- The lack of a yoke makes it hard to load solo, but it can be done if you've got good core strength. Stability - I think it's stable. The Mad River Canoe Adventure 14 has surpassed all my expectations. You do need to get your balance at first but one you realize that it's not going to tip you just get more confident as you go. Packed with features like comfortable, padded mol 937-882-6925 5605 Old Lower Valley Pike. Pros- The seats and seat backs are great. The multi-chine shallow arch hull design provides smooth tracking and comforting stability and is constructed with polyethylene for superior durability. I bought the Adventure 14 for fishing. I kept the rating at medium because it may be more stable when loaded with some gear (it was just us), and because the tracking is AWESOME - very nimble to turn, but also easy to keep on a straight line. People just flock to it. not everything can be perfect but the thing is u get it in the water and with every inch that u move its all pretty much washed away (until you have to carry it home.) I checked out all of the features and wanted it. The canoe was great, I especially like taking it out by myself. I just would not recommend taking out alone. At the end of the day we were pretty well shot and attempted to put the canoe on the top of my explorer. Then my dad wanted to give it a try, so we went. I can't imagine a better canoe for this. The tumblehome allows fore and aft paddlers to use a long kayak paddle. This canoe is stable. I had been looking at both and had heard they were really good canoes and the price was pretty fair. All in all...this is a great canoe and it'll handle everything you can throw at it. Took it out in the Chesapeake Bay and it handled large wake head on but a good amount of water entered canoe. Stability with the elliptical cross section is absolutely superb. It seemed a little "tippy" at first but most new canoes fill this way to me for the first bit. It is heavy but everything else is just perfect. Sitting out bottom down on black asphalt in the hot sun all day long? I love mine. This is my families first canoe. Would definitely purchase this again. Purchased 1 1/2 year ago and only used for 2 trips (6 times in the water). Needs a couple of holes drilled in molded seats pieces for tie downs. I've have own many canoes and the Mad River Adventurer 14 really surprised me. 5 people no tipping. I've taken the whole family down the Metro Hooch, me in back, the wife up front and my two little girls in the middle. The composite material does make it a heavier canoe but I expected that and appreciate the sturdiness and stability. When solo I fish from it. The key is, if you are going solo, right before you get to anything tricky is get your knees on the floor right behind the middle seat. It has been amazing. See more ideas about Kayaking, Hood canal, Canal. We saved nickels and dimes for the past two years to purchase a canoe. I have run a lot of class 3 and 4 ww in MT, ID, and WY. One thing I really wish was different on this canoe is the strength. The multi-chine shallow arch hull design provides smooth tracking and comforting stability and is constructed with polyethylene for superior durability. Extended decks offer protection from sun and spray. We just took it out for the first time today and I can assure you that while there is some initial instability (which seemed similar to other canoes I've been in); you have really got to try pretty hard to tip this canoe. Has a bit more room and fills the void we had for 2 up! The canoe seemed to turn very nicely as well, my only complaint would be that it doesn't hold the gear compared to some of the other canoes I've used. I have come up with a system of lifting my A 14 in the rafters of my garage, above my jeep. She was afraid to move because canoes seem unstable to her compared to the ski boat she is used to but it really paddled well and was quite stable. We both stood up in it, rocked it, and tipped it until water was about to come over the side. Fantastic. This is a tough little canoe. This version of canoe combines a few of the features of a kayak with those of a canoe. I have had this canoe for over a year and haven't had any problems with it. The seats were comfortable and there was plenty of storage areas. This is perfect for all the above. It is a bit heavy, that would be my only complaint. Class 3 are considered "Moderately difficult". Maybe good for fishing but anything higher than grade 2 then forget it. The secondary stability does seem to make up for it some. Heavy - Some might say 75 lbs isn't heavy, but I think it is. Packed with features like comfortable, padded molded seats with adjustable backrests, and plenty of space to store drinks, coolers, and cargo, this low-maintenance canoe is perfect for busy paddlers on-the-go. Two more points about this canoe: I also took it out in a small pond with a skiddish lady friend. They responded that they currently had no plans to sell a sail kit. Of course, as it is a 14' boat, you're not going to be getting all that much gear in for extended trips (short ones would be easy), but day trips are a blast. Agree the seats are very comfortable and are a major selling point for this boat. This is a great canoe. 1994 Mad River Malacite Canoe 1994 Malacite Canoe Kevlar Hull with Ash trim 50 lbs. As a solo canoeist I have found it to track fine even on windy days. Esquif Canoe Grumman Mad River Canoe ... Mad River Canoe Adventure 14' $1195.00 CAD. There are more stable canoes but come on, for the money you can't beat it. My brother and I have no trouble carrying it and fishing gear inside down a trail, and neither of us are in great physical condition. I was able to sit in the way back seat or in the middle and paddle around and turn on a dime by myself. But me and my 14 year old daughter did real well in it. I don't know where the tippy impression came from, with the first review--this thing was incredibly stable--maybe they weren't used to the secondary stability (it is somewhat like a kayak on the bottom). The vertical bar is height adjustable so that the top can be flush with the height of your roof. For over 40 years, the name Mad River Canoe has been synonymous with quality and innovation. I use it mostly fishing on class I & II rivers and have had had many great experiences with it. For the price it is a steal. I duck hunt the creeks and fish small lakes.
